The Role

As a Lecturer (Teaching) in Biotechnology and Applied Bioscience you will undertake teaching and course co-ordination while supporting the development and delivery of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs and other core activities ensuring students have an effective learning experience.

Based within the School of Science (part of the College of Engineering, Environment and Science) you will work closely with other academic colleagues to enrich the student learning and teaching experience to ensure, as appropriate, relevant aspects of research, enterprise and professional context are embedded in modules and courses.

Duties include:

Teach on modules and courses at HE levels 4-7 in relevant academic subject areas including curation, adaptation and creation of module teaching materials, delivering a variety of types of students learning sessions and supporting students as appropriate through informal and formal communication throughout teaching semesters.

Module Management & Coordination: Leading the operational delivery and continuous improvement of your modules, whilst coordinating contributing academic colleagues.

Active Curriculum & VLE Design: Designing applied, hands-on learning experiences rooted in interactive, challenge-based teaching that bridges fundamental biology with practical biotechnology.

Assessment & Quality Assurance: Overseeing the creation, internal moderation, and marking of authentic, real-world assessments that reflect industry practice, ensuring strict compliance with university quality standards.

Student Success & Session Facilitation: Leading interactive classroom sessions and practical lab work, whilst monitoring student performance data to deploy proactive academic interventions and provide dedicated support to a diverse, global student body.

Qualifications Required

• Master's in an appropriate bioscience discipline (biotechnology, applied bioscience, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry or related field), OR equivalent professional standing demonstrated through substantial industry experience at a senior technical or managerial level.

   

• Candidates applying from an industry background must also hold a good Honours degree in a relevant subject together with an appropriate professional qualification and/or membership.

   

• A teaching qualification or acceptance of the requirement to acquire one if not already held

   

• PhD or active membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous

Our Successful Candidate

You will have demonstrable experience of successful teaching at higher education levels 4-7 in biotechnology and the wider applied biosciences, with high standards of teaching, learning and student engagement consistent with our reputation and track record as a high-quality provider of teaching and learning. A strong awareness of how these scientific disciplines translate into the commercial sector - including familiarity with industrial biotechnology, regulatory frameworks, or project management - is required. Direct experience within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries is highly desirable, particularly where it informs teaching on commercialisation pathways, regulatory practice, or managerial aspects of bioscience organisations.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated, you will have experience supporting, enhancing and engaging in an active learning pedagogy with evidence in proactively supporting student success.

As a global education provider, experience and awareness of learners cultural differences and expectations with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

Innovation and collaboration are key to our success, therefore the ability to work both independently and part of a wider team with the willingness to engage in flexible ways of working are key skills required for this role.
