The Role
As a Lecturer (Teaching) in Civil Engineering you will undertake teaching and course co-ordination while supporting the development and delivery of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs and other core activities ensuring students have an effective learning experience.
You will contribute to teaching and learning in the field of Civil Engineering and will require knowledge or experience in some of the following areas:
Hydraulics/Fluid Mechanics
Civil Engineering Management
Construction Materials
Geotechnics
Based within the College of Engineering, Environment and Science you will work closely with academic colleagues to enrich the student learning and teaching experience to ensure, as appropriate, relevant aspects of research, enterprise and professional context are embedded in modules and courses.
Duties include:
Teach on modules and courses at HE levels 4-7 in Civil Engineering, Built Environment and Sustainability academic subject areas including curation, adaptation and creation of module teaching materials, delivering a variety of types of students learning sessions and supporting students as appropriate through informal and formal communication throughout teaching semesters.
Engage appropriately in professional development and active membership of professional bodies to keep abreast of developments in relevant subject areas and to ensure ‘authority to teach', including attendance at conferences or workshops (c. 4-6 days pa) and mandatory pedagogic CPD (c.4-6 days pa).
The design, creation, moderation and quality assurance of appropriate module assessment.
Assessment, marking and feedback.
To act as module leaders where required and appropriate including development of required supporting material. To take on specific course management roles as agreed with School management and course directors.
Qualifications Required
- Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or Honours Degree with appropriate professional qualification and/or membership
- A teaching qualification or acceptance of the requirement to acquire one if not already held
- PhD or active membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous
- Experience/Membership of relevant Professional Institution and/or relevant practical experience desirable.
Our Successful Candidate
You will have demonstrable experience of successful teaching at higher education levels 4-7 in Civil Engineering with high standards of teaching, learning and student engagement consistent with our reputation and track record as a high-quality provider of teaching and learning. Apprenticeship teaching and/or Practical Mentoring of Civil Engineering Graduates is beneficial for this role.
Enthusiastic and self-motivated, you will have experience supporting, enhancing and engaging in an ‘active learning’ pedagogy with evidence in proactively supporting student success.
As a global education provider, experience and awareness of learners cultural differences and expectations with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds is essential.
Innovation and collaboration are key to our success, therefore the ability to work both independently and part of a wider team with the willingness to engage in flexible ways of working are key skills required for this role.
