Our Mission

Coventry University is a global Education Group that empowers students and communities to transform their lives and society through teaching, learning, research, and enterprise.

An ambitious and innovative university, our research is designed to have real-world impact on society and tackle global challenges through our challenge-led, interdisciplinary research centres. We enable high performing research teams and future research leaders to thrive and make an impact locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

The Role

This post is funded by Innovate UK using the Contracts for Innovation mechanism, as part of the HOPE-MOVE project supporting 2,000 people with hip or knee osteoarthritis to stay active, eat well, and manage pain and mental health while awaiting NHS care. You will be responsible for using machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve the online HOPE Programme that help those living with these long-term health conditions. You will collect and manage data, design and manage ML and AI optimisations, and evaluate their impact both quantitatively and qualitatively. You will be supported by senior researchers in computer science and healthcare, along with a project consortium including the Hope for the Community social enterprise and NHS partners.

The Research Fellow role is based in the Coventry University Research Centre of Computational Science & Mathematical Modelling, which applies and develops methodologies in computational science to tackle pressing real world problems. We value research excellence, technical expertise, and programming skills. But just as important, we seek individuals with a commitment to open science, those with a willingness to collaborate and work on trans-disciplinary projects, and those who place a high value on collegiality and respect.

Within the role you will have access to our dedicated Coventry University ASPIRE programme of research training for early career researchers, as well as events and opportunities both within the centre and in the cross-centre themes on health and AI research.

Qualifications Required

PhD, or equivalent qualification, or professional experience equivalent to a PhD demonstrating an ability to carry-out independent research in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.

Our Successful Candidate

We seek a highly motivated and experienced Research Fellow with demonstrable expert knowledge and understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including applications in a research context. Programming skills in a high-level language (such as Python) and prior experience with machine learning packages are expected. An advanced knowledge of research methods and techniques, with adherence to regulations and consideration to AI ethics, is essential.

Candidates show have a record of research evidenced by high-quality publications in high profile peer reviewed venues, presentations at national/international events. They should be committed to working collaboratively on research development, delivery and dissemination including interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research, public engagement, and knowledge exchange.
