The Role

 

As Research Fellow within the Functional Materials and Chemistry Group which is part of the Centre for Manufacturing and Materials you will undertake and play a lead role in the delivery of the APC25 PULSE project. This high-profile project will afford the appointed Materials Scientist the opportunity to carry out leading research in selective soldering, materials characterisation, process development and electronic manufacturing working with an industrial consortium composed of leading companies in EV manufacture and power electronics. The highly innovative aspects of the project and industrial relevance are an invaluable combination for someone who aspires to future leadership in materials science.

 

In addition, the Research Fellow will be involved in developing and identifying new research objectives, proposals, and impact activities for your own or joint research, while contributing to REF impact rated nationally/internationally excellent.

 

You will apply innovative research methods and extend the research portfolio including the publication of your research results and outcomes. Building internal and external networks for the exchange of information and future collaboration, sharing information, and identifying potential sources of funds will play a key part of this role.

 

Contributing to teaching, learning and development programmes as appropriate, you will use research findings to inform curriculum development while assisting in the development of student research skills.

Qualifications Required

 

PhD (or equivalent) or professional experience equivalent to a PhD demonstrating an ability to carry-out independent research with a 1st Class/2.1 Degree in a materials science based subject or a chemistry based subject.

Our Successful Candidate

 

A highly motivated and experienced Research Fellow with demonstrable expert knowledge and understanding of materials science and in particular materials characterisation. The candidate will be able to quickly learn new skills and demonstrate a very practical and 'hands-on' approach to the installation and maintenance of manufacturing equipment, its process development and optimisation.

 

The Research fellow will be responsible for the delivery of the Selective Soldering Work Package of the PULSE project including its objectives and milestones, including daily planning, management, reporting and dissemination of the research.

 

They will share their research findings with presentations at consortium meetings and discussions with other consortium members as appropriate.

 

 An Advanced knowledge of materials research methods and techniques with demonstrable adherence to all safety regulations, you will have the ability to develop research objectives, projects, and proposals for own and joint research.

 

The methodology and quality of data produced in the research should be of a standard to produce excellent, high-quality publications in high profile peer reviewed journals and present at national/international events, you will be committed to working collaboratively on research development, delivery and dissemination including interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research, public engagement, and knowledge exchange.
